MG Motor New Zealand has confirmed pricing and specification of the fully electric MG4 hatchback which will arrive in three different flavours.
Each variant is based on the carmaker’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) and features a rear-wheel drive layout consisting of one electric motor. Another note is that the battery placement which has been designed to deliver 50:50 weight distribution as well as maximise interior and storage space.
Starting off the range is the Excite variant which is priced at $51,990 plus ORC. The entry-level model will arrive with a 64kWh battery which supports a maximum range of 450km and supplies its power to a 150kW electric motor.
Next up is the Essence, featuring the same 64kWh battery but with a tad lower range of 435km but boasts the same power output as the Excite. Pricing for the mid-spec model is at $54,990 plus ORC.
The 64kWh battery found on both the Excite and Essence is capable of being recharged at 140kW, equating to a charge time of 28 minutes from 10-80 per cent with a 150kW DC fast charger. However, it’ll take an hour to recharge between the same levels with a 50kW charger.
Topping the range is the Essence long range which gains a larger, 77kWh battery, boasting a range of up to 530km as well as a more powerful electric motor rated at 180kW. Pricing for the highly specified variant comes to $63,990 plus ORC.
Each variant is also eligible for the full Clean Car Rebate.
In terms of exterior appointments, the main difference between the Excite and Essence is that the former comes with 17-inch alloy wheels with aero covers while the latter gets 18-inch units. The Essence also gets a black roof and a distinctive rear centre light bar with a “constellation design”.
A choice of six colour options are available, including Dover White, Brixton Blue, Black Pearl (metallic), Camden Grey (metallic), Dynamic Red (tri-coat) and Volcano Orange (tri-coat), Sterling Silver.
There are also differences to the interiors on each variant, with black fabric cladding the Excite’s interior and synthetic leather with cloth inserts featuring on the Essence. Both get a configurable 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, as well as a four-speaker sound system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Essence features a six-speaker get up and gains satellite navigation, 360 degree parking cameras, height-adjustable loading floor, wireless phone charging, Bluetooth and an auto-dimming rear view mirror.
Both models are also equipped with the MG Pilot suite of safety features including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, speed limit assist, lane keep assist, and more as standard. If you opt for the Essence, it adds door open warning, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot detection and lane change assist.
The MG4 also comes with the brand’s seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty as standard.

MG Motor New Zealand also says the all-wheel drive X-Power MG4 is under consideration for Kiwi customers.
As of writing, MG’s website only shows the Essence which you can register your interest for now.
