Rivian has today revealed its all-new electric platform that underpins three new models, the midsize R2 SUV, midsize R3 crossover, and rally-ready R3X.
We kick things off with the larger model of the trio, the five-seat R2, which is expected to start at $45,000 ($NZ72,857).
The model will be available with two different battery sizes, the larger of which affords up to 483km of range and supplies charge to a choice of three electric motor powertrains – a single, dual, and tri-motor. Those who opt for the tri can expect to reach 97km/h from a standstill in under three seconds.
As for its design, the R2 looks quintessentially Rivian with a full-width LED bar separated by two oval light units at the front. Its boxy side profile is fairly similar to the larger R1S, albeit smaller, leading into an equally as familiar-looking rear end.
The interior has been designed for “ease of use” and features easy-to-clean materials for those who dare enter the vehicle with muddy boots or greasy hands. Both the first and second-row seating can be folded completely flat to accommodate gear or even a spot of in-car camping according to Rivian. In addition, the rear window can be wound down fully to let the outside in.
There’s a 15.6-inch infotainment display on the centre of the dashboard, home to controls for things like in-car entertainment and air conditioning, while the driver gets a smaller screen behind the steering wheel displaying all essential driving information.
As for the R3, it’ll be priced below the R2, which makes sense because it’s smaller, but Rivian hasn’t exactly said how much it’ll set you back just yet.
Nevertheless, it’s approximately five inches shorter than its larger sibling and features a design reminiscent of the original Volkswagen Golf and Lancia Delta, which we quite like. The R3 is also based on the same platform as the R2, meaning it’ll feature the same battery and electric motor options.
Little else was mentioned about the R3, other than it’ll spawn a performance variant called the R3X which looks like a rally car more than anything else. Another tick from us.
Production of the R2 is expected to begin in the first half of 2026, while the R3 and R3X will follow soon after. Nothing has been said of a local launch yet.
