Surprise! Honda has unveiled an all-new Prelude at the Japan Mobility Show, breathing new life into the nameplate after 22 long years sat dormant.
Before you get your hopes up, the car you see before you is only a concept, but it could spawn a future production model later down the track.
The head honcho of Honda, Toshihiro Mibe, said the reason the Japanese carmaker resurrected the badge was because of its customers’ desire for more sports models and to mark the beginning of a long line of fun-to-drive cars.
“This model will become the prelude for our future models which will inherit the ‘joy of driving’ into the full-fledged electrified future and embody Honda’s unalterable sports mindset,” says Mibe.
However, little detail was said about the concept, with the brand feeling as if it does much of the talking for itself. We can safely say that it isn’t shouty though, and that’s something we’re starting to see from the brand when it comes to its latest performance models – think the new Civic Type R (FL5).
The Prelude’s sleek two-door design instead tells us that Honda intends to keep things conservative, only pinching body panels where necessary, and installing splitters and diffusers with function over form in mind.
In a way, the concept reminds us of the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Peugeot RCZ, thanks to its short bonnet and boot.
There was no mention of any technical specifications, but we do know that the Prelude Concept is electrified in some form if not fully electric.
It’s possible the model could enter production in the not-so-distant future, but if not, we’re excited to see what the model preludes for the future. S2000 anyone?
