The Toyota GR Supra is at the end of a six-year run, signing off with a circuit-ready 320kW special edition featuring a strengthened chassis, aggressive styling cues and a race-ready cockpit.
The A90-generation Supra launched in 2019 as the fifth generation of Toyota’s big sports coupé. It was codeveloped by BMW whose Z4 roadster is also built by Magna Steyr in Austria.
Behind it all was Akio Toyota, who said: “I secretly wanted to make it.”
It uses 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre six-pot BMW engines, with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The run-out A90 Final Edition is limited to 300 units globally, and is based on the range-topping 3.0-litre car. However, power rises to 320kW, more than the 290kW of the Porsche 911 Carrera, while the torque peak is 570Nm. It will run with a manual transmission only.
While not official, it is expected that the 0-100km/h time will fall below 4.0sec, making it amongst the fastest Toyota road cars ever built.
Added power comes from less restrictive intake and exhaust systems, along with an ECU remap.
There’s also a new baffle plate in the oil pan to stop oil starvation on track, added cooling measures and an Akrapovič muffler tuned for a “powerful engine sound”.
Other mods include new brake pads, drilled discs, adjustable KW dampers and a strengthened rear subframe “to improve limit-pushing performance” in corners.
Power steering is more direct, too, and there’s more camber to improve grip. On that, there are also new Michelin PS 2 tyres that are 10 per cent wider.
Finishing things off is a carbonfibre rear spoiler, wind-cheating canards and a large cooling vent on the bonnet.
Inside are carbonfibre Recaro buckets trimmed in Alcantara and carbonfibre trim elements. Red seat belts are the finishing touch.
The standard 3.0-litre Supra also gets a final makeover, with subtle styling tweaks, a new differential and a ducktail spoiler. It will be known as the Supra Lightweight Evo, the number of which Toyota might produce being unclear. It too uses a six-speed manual trans.
Although the Final Edition will be the last road-going Supra, Toyota says it “will continue to hone the Supra through motorsports activities”.
