Volkswagen plans to launch eight ‘affordable’ electric vehicles by 2027, according the company boss, Thomas Schaefer.
Talking with Auto Motor und Sport recently he said: “We have to produce our vehicles profitably and put them on the road at affordable prices.”
One of those supposed cheapies is the upcoming ID.2, development of which has been fast-tracked. Where previously delivery was within 50 months, now Volkswagen wants it on the shop floor within three years. So the electric hatchback should disrobe next year.
VW showed off a concept of the ID.2 in 2023, the ID.2all. Even back then it said that the production version was designed for low production costs and a low sticker price. They even put a figure on it of $US26,500 ($NZ43,500). The ID.2 will use a modified version of the MEB platform that underpins the ID.4. The simplified version is known as MEB Entry.
Volkwagen is also looking at a $US22k ($NZ36k) cheapie EV. This will be based on the ID.Life concept VW unveiled in 2021. It uses a basic version of the MEB platform (MEB Small). Presumably, it will be the ID.1. We previewed that vehicle in May this year.
Volkswagen is also planning a sub-$US35k EV due out in 2027.
In total, the Volkswagen Group brands hope to be exporting 25 electric models by 2030.
