French cars live at this interesting intersection where their inherently high level of quirkiness means they’re both often considered charming and clever, while simultaneously being vulnerable to being made fun of.
The Grand Tour’s latest special, Carnage A Trois, appears to acknowledge this catch 22 with full gusto. The series appears to take a loving, but also not so loving, look at French cars through the ages.
You can view the show’s new trailer below.
The trailer is a juxtaposition of Grand Tour hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond exchanging ‘wow, that’s cool and weird’ moments while looking at French cars, while also showing French cars (and an unlucky BMW estate) getting pulverised.
The trailer features Hammond driving a bizarre Leyat Helica, commonly known (among anoraks anyway) as ‘The Plane Without Wings’. It’s a car powered by a propeller mounted to the front, not unlike an airplane.
Hammond and Clarkson also share a few moments of admiration with one of Citroen’s most beloved and interesting cars, the sleek and low SM.
On the flipside, we also see a Citroen 2CV and C3 Pluriel plummeting from the sky. A Renault Scenic gets parallel parked in a rather haphazard manner. And a Citroen Berlingo rolls down a mountain.
Carnage A Trois debuts on Amazon Prime on December 17.
